'Call Of Duty: Black Ops 3' Film Noir Zombie Mode Revealed, And It Looks Amazing

This article is more than 8 years old.

I admit, I wasn't expecting a 1940's themed zombie mode for the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops III. I knew there'd be a zombie mode, but one that looks this much like The Rocketeer? Color me surprised. And happy.

This looks great:

As always there's an all-star voice cast for the zombie/monster co-op mode, including Jeff Goldblum, Heather Graham, Neal McDonough, Ron Perlman and Robert Picardo. Perlman and Goldblum have such distinctive voices, too. Should be good.

Better still, the zombie mode---titled Shadows of Evil---comes bundled with Black Ops 3 on its November 6th release. Here's how developer Treyarch describes it:

Call of Duty: Black Ops III: Zombies – Shadows of Evil drops players into a recognizable yet terrifyingly unfamiliar world, as they uncover the secrets and challenges laid out for them by a shadowy figure, who holds their fate in his hands. Set in a 1940’s film-noir era, Shadows of Evil introduces four unwitting characters – The Magician, The Femme-Fatale, The Cop and The Boxer – into an unraveling experience masterminded by the mysterious Shadow Man.

It's a bit Lovecraftian actually, with the weird monsters and film-noir setting. A touch of Cthulhu for sure. You can even eat candy and get special powers, like tentacle arms. This is all very cool for a Call of Duty release---so cool, in fact, I'd really love to see Activision put out a full Call of Duty with this setting/time period. (Not just another World War II game, but full-blown Weird Fiction.)

“Treyarch has crafted a totally unique and face-melting gameplay experience for our loyal Zombies community, with Call of Duty: Black Ops III: Zombies – Shadows of Evil” Mark Lamia, Studio Head, Treyarch, said in a statement. “The development team has packed Shadows of Evilwith more gameplay and fun than any other experience before it, and has an appropriately twisted and deep narrative, performed by fantastic acting talent, that will keep our fans spinning."

Update:

Activision has launched a new contest/charity drive with charity fundraising platform Omaze. Fans who donate to the Call of Duty Endowment, a non-profit started by Activision-Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick which helps fund veterans nonprofit groups that work to get veterans good jobs after their military service, are entered in a contest to become a zombie in the game. Activision is matching every dollar donated up to $1 million. It's absolutely a great cause to support, with or without a contest.

You can enter to win here.

The charity drive/contest runs through August 31, 2015. According to the press release, "fans can enter by donating $10 or more to the Call of Duty Endowment via Omaze for a chance to be zombified at Treyarch and appear in Call of Duty: Black Ops III DLC. The winner will also have his or her name immortalized in a Zombies mode level, have lunch with Treyarch studio head Mark Lamia, and receive a behind-the-scenes tour of the studio behind the game."
